Presentation Description

Presenter: Angelina Macri

For most people, a long-term relationship represents the most important financial relationship they will ever enter into—yet most enter it simply assuming they are both reading from the same plan and aiming for the same objectives. This lack of communication often results in corrosive feelings of betrayal and disappointment that ultimately lead to the relationship’s end. Mediation is an invitation to discuss, to explore, and to agree.

In this session, you’ll learn how financial misunderstandings can undermine even the strongest relationships, how mediation can reframe the conversation around prenuptial agreements, and what role you can play in guiding that process. You’ll also walk away with a better understanding of the types of mediators, the boundaries of prenuptial agreements, and the importance of independent legal advice (ILA).

Key Takeaways:

Personal finances: the last taboo and leading cause of divorce!

The business of marriage: partnership, limited liability company, or joint venture (…pick your own adventure!)

Benefits of mediating a prenuptial agreement: invitation vs. ultimatum

Different types of mediators: one size does not fit all

What you can and can’t contract out of— a.k.a. why ILA is important!
